Some events you photograph from the outside, documenting what's happening in front of you. Others you photograph from the inside, where you're genuinely part of what's unfolding. Taupō Pride 2024 was firmly the latter.
Pride events are a unique photography challenge. The energy is high, the moments are fast, the colour is extraordinary and the community showing up deserves to be represented with authenticity and care. Getting that balance right, being present without being intrusive, capturing joy without turning people into subjects, takes experience and a genuine respect for the occasion.
The Brief
I was commissioned to document Taupō Pride 2024, providing the event with a complete photography record of the day. The goal was straightforward. Capture the energy, colour and community spirit of the event as it unfolded, in a way that the organisers and community could be proud of.
The Shoot
Working across the event throughout the day, I moved through the crowd and performances capturing candid moments, portraits, colour and atmosphere. Event photography at this scale is about instinct as much as technique. Reading the room, anticipating moments before they happen, and knowing when to step back and let a scene breathe. The Taupō Pride community brought plenty to work with.
The Result
The final images gave Taupō Pride 2024 a visual record worthy of the occasion. Authentic, vibrant and full of the community spirit that makes the event what it is.
