When Craig Turner-Bullock handed me years of footage from the making of his book Dogs of the World, I knew I'd been given something special. He trusted me to shape it into a documentary, and I'm proud of the film we've ended up with. As a Hawke's Bay videographer who also works in documentary, it's the kind of project I love: a real story, told with care.

About the Book

Dogs of the World is a 240-page hardback of nearly 70 dog breeds, photographed in the landscapes that shaped them. Craig, a Christchurch pet photographer and Grand Master of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP), spent close to a decade travelling to make it, across more than 20 countries. The pictures range from the frozen north to subtropical coastlines, and each one shows a dog in its homeland.

Craig has been a professional pet photographer since 2001, won over 200 international awards, and was the first to win a portrait category at the NZIPP Iris Awards with a non-human subject. This is his fourth book, after Quake Dogs, Quake Cats and A Dog's Life.

The Documentary

The film follows the making of the book, with Craig's shoots from around the world and his own interviews. The short film is around 30 minutes in length.

Hawkes Bay video production: how I edited the documentary

I didn't film this one. Craig did, over years and in many places, so the job was to find the story inside a very large amount of material. It's a different challenge from shooting, and one I enjoy: deciding what to keep, what to cut and where the heart of the film is.
